cactus a plenty

If I was dying in the desert, would I know better to utilize the cacti? 30mins.

  1. Hey Teas! This is awesome! The sun could be a little brighter, but it's awesome. :D

  2. Some cool stuff going on here! I love how you guys are supporting each other. That's the way to do it.

You should work on your values. Look for the darkest shadows and the brightest highlights before you start painting. And don't start with a white canvas. It's always easier to start out with a midtone. That way you can work towards highlights and shadows. If you start with a white canvas you already have the brightest possible color in your painting and it's harder to judge the values since you can only go darker.
Good job on the color temperature in this one but the mountain in the background could use a bit more red.

  4. Thank you Goro,

I will apply these techniques next time. If I may ask, when you say start off with a midtone value, would it be a midtone value that is part of the picture or would you suggest just going with like a mid gray?

About your color temperature comment of putting more red in the background.
Very cool, because as students and learning certain guidelines like warms in the foreground and cools in the background, I find myself fighting instinct to do so. But hopefully from this I will paint more freely.

  5. Definitely a midtone that is part of the picture. So in this case some kind of brown. The color just below the sun would be a good value to start with.
